What is Mindfulness
Mindfulness is about being fully aware of our experience and seeing clearly whatever is happening in our lives in that present moment. The intention is not to view it through a distorted lens of ruminative thoughts, habits and judgements. As human beings, we are often not ‘present’ but habitually preoccupied with the past and very busy predicting the future. In this ‘automatic’ state we often miss things, fail to notice what is good about life, ignore the messages our bodies are telling us, feed ourselves negative language and behaviour and generally are more likely to ‘have our anxious buttons pressed’! That is, we tend to generate more stress on top of the real pressures of everyday life. We then wonder why we might feel like this, why we then might suffer more chronic pain and ill-health and in particular why those around us look and feel stressed too!
Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally
~ Jon Kabat-Zinn ~
It may sound alien but by learning to experience the present moment as it really is and in a way that suspends judgement, criticism and self-criticism, we can begin to notice what is going on and develop the ability to step away from habitual, often unconscious emotional and physiological reactions to events and then respond more skilfully, making wiser choices and taking better decisions. It does not get rid of life’s many pressures, but we can certainly change our relationality to them, and learn to respond more calmly and in a way that creates a positive impact in our lives bringing about more happiness, joy, freedom, kindness and a better level of pain management. Over time Mindfulness gives people the possibility of returning much more speedily from a stressful situation to a sense of balance, equilibrium and peace (no matter how difficult or intense a situation might have been). This can play a significant role in enhancing our psychological and physical wellbeing as a result.
In today’s rush, we all think too much, seek too much, want too much, and forget about the joy of just Being

What Does Mindfulness Involve
Mindfulness is cultivated by exploring various approaches to living, utilizing a variety of tools and strategies which are both informal and integrative in everyday life and formal through the platform of meditation.
Formal means taking the time (even 10 mins a day will do) to intentionally sit, stand, lie down and focus on the breath, physical sensations, sounds, thoughts, feelings and emotions. It can literally be practised anywhere for example at home, at work, in trains, planes, buses etc.
Informal involves noticing and bringing your attention to daily activities such as eating, walking, working, writing, reading, listening, talking, exercising, gardening, engaging with others and basically any action whether at work or home that you may be taking. The main point is to be:
HERE AND NOW since this is
WHERE AND WHEN life is lived
~ Bob Stahl, Ph.D. and Elisha Goldstein. Ph.D. ~
Coming back to the present moment, however briefly, can act as a springboard to the next moment of your life.
If the quality with which a person handles a difficult moment shifts by even one per cent, then that is an important shift, because it affects the next moment, and the next and so on, so one small change can have a large impact in the end.
~ Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale ~
Mindfulness does not require any special equipment so is very cost effective. It only needs YOU!
